No Doubt cites Morrissey and Smiths as influences
Posted on Mon, Apr 24 2000 at 9:03 a.m. PDT
by David T. <[email protected]>
From Oscar (if I'm very funny why...):

Today (4/12) I was driving to school listening to KROQ Los Angeles and No Doubt was being interviewed. When a caller asked who had influenced their music they all said British punk bands, they mention the Cure, Depeche Mode and the caller asked "Morrissey?" The singer (Gwen Stefani) said, "Yes I love Morrissey."

From Asif Husain:

No Doubt were on the KROQ Kevin & Bean show and when asked their influences they emphasised their love for Morrissey and The Smiths. I believe Tony Kanal even called Moz brilliant.

Comments / Notes

Yes, Moz is brilliant. It's too bad that No Doubt are a lot of no talent hacks. They ought to be called No Talent. It's surprising that someone as talented as Moz could be an influence on so many crappy bands.

I don't like No Doubt at all, but I definately don't think they're "no talent hacks". Maybe if the lead singer weren't half as pretty, the band would be given some more respect.

no doubt is a really cool band and just because they don't sound like morrissey, ya don't have to put them down! i could see if they said something bad about him, but they were prasing him & you're saying that they have no talent!? geez, morrissey fans are getting bitter!

i like no doubt! :)
yes, i live in Southern CA! - Mon, Apr 24, 2000 at 16:07:22 (PDT) | #9

Of course we are bitter everyday our love for him grows and as each day passes we realise that still he is out of our reach. We love him so much and he does'nt even know our names and will never look at us with love in his eyes. Therefore ANYONE who comments on him, (and is thus in the line of fire for all our frustration) will get it in the neck. We can't help it. As Jack the Ripper is quoted as saying "tis love that made me thus"

Last I heard Madonna was sickly Gwen's idol. No Doubt are a relatively new band and will claim to like anyone and everyone in an attempt to be liked themselves.

It does make a little sense when people like Howard stern for example make a rude comment about Morrissey and his fans get upset-- but, why do they get upset and start Bitching when someone 'famous' such as Gwen says she LOVES MORRISSEY?? This is a compliment to him and really has nothing to do with no doubt. Maybe they were influenced by the cure,dm and morrissey but it doesnt mean they have to sound like them. They arent one of my fav bands but you must give them a little credit for liking MR M !

No Doubt sucks ass! Save Ferris can kick their ass! Well anyways No Doubt is the disgrace of the SKA community! If Gwen said "Morrissey, is he like a talk show host in Europe or something?" , I will get a plane ticket to OC and kick her buns! But at least she knows who he is! Save Ferris for example are totally influenced by The Smiths! and I think that rocks! SCREW ALL GWEN-A-BES!Good Day all!

First of all, a lot of these comments are totally lame. Who cares if Gwen likes Morrissey. That just means she has some good taste. And, No Doubt are not a relatively new band at all. I remember seing them play at local J.C.'s 11 years ago. They have been playing together for quite some time. I really don't care for them either way, but to say No Doubt sucks, and then praise Save Ferris, you are quite foolish. Like SF mean anything to the "ska" scene. Come on now.....really.

Inept,

Look Save Ferris hasn't been around along time but they are the few SKA bands, that give SKA a good name! On a personal note Save Ferris has to be one of my favorite bands of all time! At least they haven't sold out like No Doubt! I praise Save Ferris for having talent and Emotion in their songs! Thats something No Doubt lacks of, yeah they might sound SKA-ish or whatever but they totally SUCK and have no meaning to me! No Doubt used to be a really kick ass SKA funky pop band with the Self titled album and the Beacon Street Collection but lately they lack everything I LOVE! Oh well! Good Day All!

sorry, but third wave ska isn't ska..(which means no doubt along with save ferris, reel big crap, less than jake, etc. aren't ska)...they may have played ska-ish music a few times, but they aren't ska...

if you'd like to listen to ska, get a desmond dekker or skatalites album. try the 2 tone ska performers as well (ie: specials, selecter, the beat, madness) - they're excellent and are real ska.

enough non-morrissey rant. any news on whether moz and the lads are recording the new album yet?

Okay, I am not nor will I ever be a No Doubt fan but I saw their Behind the Music on VH1 last week & was somewhat impressed with how much effort & time they put into their music & band. Morrissey fans have become bitter. I think it is great that Gwen Stefani gave Morrissey credit. Just because their music is different than Morrissey's doesn't mean that the Smiths & bands in that genre could not have been an influence. Good for them they didn't become a copy cat band, like that one band, oh I don't know.... Oasis...

Actually, I think No Doubt has been around for a while. Maybe not as long as Moz but certainly longer than Save Ferris. I remember seeing them open for Concrete Blonde back in 1991-1992?It was a benefit for Jerry Brown for President at the Hollywood Palladium so you do the math. Anyway, I don't really listen to their music but I'm not going to make the time to hate them. I thought they were kind of cool back then, not really what I was into but I got into it anyway. Anyway, they worked hard and long to get where they are today and can respect that.

The discussion over America and England has been taken way too far. However, as American Spelling has come in to question, it should be noted that there is no Standard English, and therefore no correct way of spelling. The number of people in the world, not just America or England, that have the intelligence of a gnat is growing far and beyond rational levels. Enough of that though. I am an American who loves England and Morrissey, does not eat meat, knows that Egypt is in Africa and Rome is in Italy. Can we end this now?

No Doubt have been around for 13 years and have had quite a prolific output, much more than they get credit for, and can see Moz for the absolute genius he is, which says a lot I think.
