Yes, I saw this too and was amused. If only Morrissey could be persuaded to do a turn on the upcoming Sixths record (though you never know).

Incidentally for anyone who doesn't know them, the Magnetic Fields are quite possibly the best act in the world, and their wittily miserabilist lyrics are heartily recommended to anyone who likes their Moz taken with a pinch or two of salt.

Yup, the Magnetic Fields are sublime. Stephen Merritt et al (his peeps) put out those 60 Love Songs that would have to be about the best thing put outlast year. Great stuff; there's some junk but when Merritt hits, it's a direct and agonizing bullseye. niiiiice

Without question, 69 Love Songs was the best recording put out last year. And without question, Morrissey and Stephin Merritt are the two best lyricists ever. I thought Neil Hannon might have received a nod from Stephin since Neil has paid such steady homage to him throughout the Divine Comedy's career, but it seems churlish to quibble.

I spoke with Boz for a long time in Las Vegas, in December. He had brought "69 Love Songs" by the Magnetic Fields with him along on the tour, and was listening to it constantly. He found Stephin Merrit to be "literate" and "witty" like Morrissey, and he was trying to get Moz to listen to the record. So who knows? Maybe we will see Moz doing a Magnetic Fields cover or singing on the next 6ths record. God knows they're two peas in a pod....

I particularly love "Take Ecstasy With Me", it's one of Magnetic Field's trippiest tunes I think...
and ...oh man, wouldnt we love to hear Moz singing any of his stuff!! He could well relate to many of his lyrics and some would just go perfect with morrissey's voice....like 'either i love u or u dont' love me' for example....

yes yes yes, chris knox is brilliant, if you can get his solo albums croaker, beat, seizure or duck shaped pain/ tall dwarfs weeville or fork songs please do. Any Moz will love the humour honesty and insight that the eccentric from new zealand displays. In my mind he is the souths morrissey.

CELEBRATE HUMANITY!!!!!!okay, in my opinion, Moz is basically mainstream in the us. already. I don't know why
people insist on pidgionholing him into some dark corner where noone knows about him. About 80 percent of people that I talk to who are not even music fans have heard of him. I think it's time moz fans wake up and realize...MORRISSEY IS POP!!!
I think we all like to refer to morrissey as being this alien beign because we all feel like aliens ourselves. The fact is, he is just human like all of us. He is human and he needs to be loved...just like everybody else does...and it's about time he recieves the credit from millions like he deserves.

Prepare for blasphemy:

Okay, after all the hype a few years ago over Merritt, I bought the Sixths CD and loved it. I thought the songs were great. So, naturally, I tried a couple of Magnetic Fields CDs.

Hated them. Intensely.

I just cannot stand Merritt's voice when he "sings" his own songs. I know, I know, I'm horrible, but I have to be honest. When others sing his tunes, I think they're fantastic songs. I really want to try "69 Songs", but I'm terrified I'll hate it after spending that large an amount.

Has his singing style changed at all? Is it just me?

Well, I personally prefer it when Stephin Merritt
sings his own songs rather than other singers singing his songs.

I love Merritt's singing, but I can't honestly say his style has changed too much for 69 Love Songs - in fact, if anything, the music has stepped back a bit to give his voice more 'room'. So you might be best not buying that, and instead picking up a copy (if you haven't already) of The Wayward Bus/Distant Plastic Trees (on a handy 2-for-1 CD!) - the two albums the band made with Susan Amway singing instead of Stephin.

A friend and I were talking about what SM songs we'd like to see Moz cover, inspired by this thread. The main suggestions: "He Didn't", "With Whom To Dance", "I'm Sorry I Love You" (radically rarranged) and "The Desperate Things You Made Me Do". But the styles are ultimately very different.

How about adding 'Don't Look Away' to the list?

What about Martin Gore of Depeche Mode? Where is he on this list?
