Boy George's Attitude
Posted on Mon, Jul 5 1999 at 8:58 a.m. PDT
by David T. <[email protected]>
Thanks to Peter England for the following:

Published in the July edition of the gay UK magazine Attitude, is this quote from Boy George on Morrissey, taken from the magazine's main interview.

Q: What were the Human League like when you toured America with them recently?
A: As miserable as hell!! They went on TV and said they didn't get on with us and I have to tell you, we tried everything. I think they thought they should have been headlining, so that put their noses out of joint. Half way through the US tour, the blonde one came into my dressing room and said (adopts dodgy Yorkshire accent) 'we've got a mutual friend and he said we should be friends', and I was like, 'well, we've only got two dates to go, it's a bit late for that, love'.

I really did make an effort with Phil Oakey, but he was just miserable, unfriendly and frosty. I still love their music, though. I mean, I don't like Morrissey as a person, but I still think he's a genius and he's written some of the best lyrics of the past twenty years. I had tea with him in Paris once, and it was the most hideous experience of my life. Why? Because he just didn't speak! Afterwards he told someone in his record company that I was 'overbearing'. He's just a stupid old closet, really!

Wouldn't you have liked to be a fly on the wall in that Paris tea room? Two lumps, please.

Boy George sucks!

That's predictable. Whenever somebody famous (who isn't Morrissey) gets mentioned on this site, everybody says 'they suck'. Because they're not Morrissey. I like Boy George.

I agree with you "Laughable Life" it seems everyone who visits Morrissey-Solo website and happens to read something that goes against their happy little Morrissey Subliminal world they get upset and say that person sucks but you have to remember that your dealing with mostly very young kids who have been brainwashed by Morrissey for the past 11 years since he has been a solo artist.

did any of you really think that Morrissey and Boy George would get along? Give me a break....I would be wondering what was worng with both of them if they got along......At least george commented favorably on the music....and I doubt Morrissey would be so kind as to say that the Karmakarmalizardsong included some of the "best lyrics of the last twenty years"! We should be happy Mr. george isn't so drugged out he is blind to brilliance......

I wonder is the tea party was predeeded by an invitation from either one of them, or if it was set up by PR people for a photo op or interview? The whole situation would have an effect on the way both of them might respond. Remember also that Moz doesn't want to be dragged out of his closet by a drag queen!

I don't know how recent this was, but I read in an interview that Morrissey was reading Boy George's autobiography. I don't recall the exact comments, but he mentioned that, although he was never really into Culture Club, he was thoroughly enjoying the book and, in fact, couldn't put it down. He called Boy George a very humorous individual. He also pointed out that it was also interesting because he know lots of the people mentioned in the book. I wonder if this meeting took place before, or after he read the book. If it was after, I wonder if the meeting was arranged because Morrissey enjoyed the read.

Firstly Bjorn do u really have to state the obvious? I'm sure Boy George will be the first one to admit he sucks (cock that is), which is more than your dear Stephen will. And Iamawas, while I agree that Morrissey produced some wonderful music with The Smiths and during his early solo career his latest releases have seen him plundering the depths of mediocrity - Dagenham Dave indeed, darling. Meanwhile Boy George has gone from strength to strength a sa singer, dj, writer and general icon. Oh and if your karmakarmalizard pun is an attempt at wit please in future don't bother.

Hmmmmmm.......never fails to amuse me..... If you weren't there, which not a one of you were, then you don't know what happened. Boy is a charming person who has grown up tremendously over the past decade. His wit and humour are very similiar to that of your idol. His book was indeed funny and a must read for any anglophiles in the crowd. It is o.k. to enjoy the music of more than one artist by the way!

Boy is a bitch, and a fat ugly one at that, but at least his comments are witty - not as good as Moz, for he's just a stupid old closet read I'm an arcane old wardrobe! I like Culture Club but I suspect that's cos they're 80s If I was older then I'm sure I wouldn't have liked them as much, although their early stuff, the ultra-embarrassing War Song aside still holds up.
Boy George was a real icon then with massive influence, really making gayness visible - I remember my social education teacher, who really should know better, said that homosexuality came into fashion because of him! I wonder if Moz should come out, maybe people would respect him more if he did, but that would be like an admission of happiness and maybe he'd lose fans who'd think he was lying before, making all those words up to get fame.. oh well, the vexed question indeed!

I think Morrissey dislikes Boy because he's too flaming. Morrissey's gay as hell, but he's so in the closet; well... you know how he is, but Boy burned the closet he came out of a long time ago. He's too gay for Morrissey. Even though Morrissey's even a bit too gay for me.

Boy George outlasted his 15 minutes of fame quite some time ago, which explains his obvious bitterness. Morrissey said it best "...popular music is ruled by those with big mouths and small minds!"

Long live the closet that remains. A curtain call for dear old boy and the mozzer still remains. And though it seems the fire's out, it still is quite the same. Don't you wish you knew how to accept your own hypocrisies. Yes....Indeed.

Who really cares what that old queen has to say anyway? The only thing that he has done worth any significance is tea with Morrissey. I noticed many people who comment do in fact take a very defensive stance and to them i say relax a bit. If anyone has any negative comments about the Smiths or Morrissey, let them-just keep in mind the source.
If someone as vile as Boy George, Dave Gahan or Robert Smith talked about how well they get on with Morrissey then we would all be in trouble. I would rather they talk bad about him and show envy (masked behind spite), than pat him on the back and say, "He's one of us."

I found it extremely intriguing what various celebrities have said about Morrissey, mainly his being difficult (Siouxie - I'm paraphrasing) and quiet (Boy George). Here he is, this brilliant lyricist who spews forth wit and charm in interviews and yet, in person-to-person meetings with famous folk (and perhaps most people?) he's this awkward, difficult, uncomfortable human being...no point to this, realy - I just find it fascinating.

Oh, and Madonnissy, I don't think Morrissey dislikes "flaming" gays (if you'll recall, he had drag queens open up a Smiths show in California, and you mustn't forget Candy Darling as cover star, and then there's Pete Burns); I just don't think he was ever keen on using it as an image for himself.

Sorry for the long post.

I got to talk to one of the guitarists backstage at a World Party show. One question I had for him dealt with what he thought of Morrissey (being a Brit and all). He mentioned that most Brits think Morrissey's just a "wanker". Why can't fans realize that maybe he's just a big jerk? I mean, I've been a huge fan since Viva Hate and I've been able to live with it. Why can't everyone else?

It really is funny how a "flaming Gay" who "sucks" can inspire the comments of 30-year olds and the Morrissey-brainwashed alike.
Morrissey is forever mutable and has as many opinions as he does suffering anecdotes. Boy George is too freaky for himself half of the time.(hence, the heroin-escape route).
Really, who gives a @#!!!, they are both loaded and I am poor as dirt in Alabama, sacraficing a loaf of bread just to listen to the both of them drone on.
They probably both can't wait to shag each others brains out!!!
Now that is when I would want to be a fly on the wall!

Boy George said that he thinks Morrissey is a genious and has written some of the best songs ever. Isn't that a good thing? He doesn't have to bloody well like him. Considering some of the things he said about people in his autobiography, I think Morrissey got out of it pretty well.
Morrissey and Boy George shagging their brains out..Interesting mental picture there ;-)
Some people are so precious about Morrissey - not everyone who meets him has to love him you know...

NOAM!!!!! We absolutely MUST have words! "homophobia means ...." Now, If we're going to split hairs, the words means a fear of the same. Homo - same. Phobia - fear.
But in our current society, there can be no debate that it has taken on the connotation of a fear or dislike of homosexuals! It is cut and dried!

Is there any truth to the rumour that there was a (very famous) third person having tea with Morrissey and Boy George in Paris? That person being a one Tom Petty. Can someone confirm this?

MARS - Thu, Jul 08, 1999 at 12:46:27 (PDT)

More on Morrissey and Boy's brush with fame via Mr. Petty.

I guess Tom was in that Paris cafe with his daughter. When Morrissey (who is huge fan of Mr. Petty and the Heartbreakers) recognized the legendary Rock and Roller, he approached Tom and introduced himself. Ironically, Tom's daughter (who is a fan of both Moz and Boy) was just as pleased to meet the two gentlemen.

(This is what I've heard. Is it true?)

I laughed my head of when I saw Boy George's quote "He's just a stupid old closet". If Boy had his way he would out all the gay pop stars and god there are many of those. I think I would have snubbed him also and just enjoyed my tea - but quite how the arrangement of them having tea together in Paris in the first place surprises me! I'm sure he would rather a location like Workington motor cafe instead wouldn't he?
Geroge was quite funny though on the recent Jo Whiley show on C4 when him and fellow queen Neil Tenannt chatted about awful Ibiza music and the like.......

Rather than being a "stupid old closet", as Mr. George refers to him, perhaps Moz is simply someone who refuses to play by the conventional rules when it comes to sexuality. Our Steven may be gay as hell, but the fact that he doesn't feel the need to broadcast his every sexual impulse on a worldwide scale is commendable--he himself has commented in interviews that sexual labels do nothing but cripple people. That aside, Morrissey's "closet" is smart business as a pop star: look at the latest non-declarative, one Ricky Martin. Ten million and counting.

The world's Moz's closet. He doesn't believe in sexual prefixes, remember?? So where's there to come out to? And although sexual reports/surveys tend to be highly skeptical based on participants usual lack of honesty, I have read that it is estimated that no more than, i think, 2-3% of the population is entirely homo- or heterosexual.
Gay morrissey fans love to speculate the singer's gayness/coming out of the closet and straight morrissey fans use just that fact as defense. My bet--he's probably a eunuch. Doesn't explain him being a baritone, though...

I don't know whether he should come out, everyone knows anyway and he doesn't really have to confirm it a la Stipe or Neil Tennant, I dunno if he's afraid but it is pretty sad if he is, older gay men are so dirty anyway - lol. But if you think about it, the smart ones stay in the closet - Michael Stipe(although he recently "revealed" he slept with both men and women - never!) Jodie Foster and Moz, am I being too litiguous lol. If he did come out it could be tacky and he'd be the um, butt of jokes(if he isn't already to unfunny idiots like Manson) like Ron Davies, George Michael and Stephen Gatley - although they were all forced out of the closet and that would be terrible, if he decides to do it himself then it'd have to be dignified.
