From Patrick:

I've been doing some research on the Mozzer in libraries for a college paper of mine, and I've come across a little humorous bit of trivia. I found a cassette by a folk band called The Morrisseys called Morrisseys On Stage and they have a song entitled "I Never Will Marry." I thought it was a funny coincidence.

Comments / Notes

morrissey must have written 'cemetary gates' with tongue in cheek...

I remember seeing that song listed on an old harry belafonte record of my mother's and thinking the same coincidence, but I don't remember if I listened to it to see if they are familiar. Moz does have a habit of re-arranging old songs into his own. "Black eyed Susan" is a rewrite of the Buckinghams' "Susan" and "This is not your country" is very similar to another song of theirs. and of course "work is a four-letter word" was "love is a four letter word" by Cilla Black. etc.

I'll settle this one: "I Never Will Marry" is a traditional folk song, meaning that from place to place the lyrics may vary. The chorus is from a British broadside ballad. These are the lyrics for "I Never Will Marry" from the Joan Baez Songbook:

Chorus:I never will marry
I'll be no man's wife
I intend to live single
all the days of my life.

Some say love is a gentle thing
it has only brought me pain
and the only boy I ever loved
is gone on that midnight train (chorus)

Your company, your company,
your company unto me
it makes me feel while I'm away
that every day is three (chorus)

You'll see the grass whereon you stand
arise and grow again,
but love it is a killin' thing
did you ever feel the pain? (chorus)

I wish my heart were made of glass,
wherein you might behold
all the wonders of my love,
the letters are writ in gold. (chorus)

One more thing: Cilla Black's song is called "Work is a Four Letter Word". "Love is a Four Letter Word" is a Bob Dylan song.

I would be interested to know what the subject of your paper would be...and how you were able to tie in Morrissey?
