From Isa:
I've just stumbled
across an article in a French newsletter called "Contact",
it's for the people who hold a FNAC membership card. The
FNAC is a superstore like Virgin
Megastore but with a huge book and new technology
department as well (literature, music, videos, hi-fi,
computers ...).
In this newsletter there is an interview with Philippe
Manoeuvre who presented the famous
French programme 'Les Enfants du Rock' on TV in the eighties. On today's music he says: "personne n'arrive à la cheville des Smiths,
dernier groupe mythique dans
l'histoire du rock" [ no band has
equaled the Smiths so far, they are the last mythical
band in rock history].
This month the FNAC launches a new commercial deal called
TRIBU[TE] (tribu is French for tribe -
so it's a pun!): each month a mythical band / singer will be the FNAC's host, their CD's will
be displayed at reduced price and
there will be a free brochure in which the artist's discography and biography are detailed.
The Smiths are the first band to be honored! It's called
"TRIBU[TE] No 1: the best of the
Smiths". The selected albums are Hatful,
Meat, Queen, and Strangeways...

Comments / Notes
didn't know that the magazine "Rock n Folk" liked the Smiths. Are you sure it wasn't the Stones ?

Yes, I'm sure. I can read French. The interview was with P.Manoeuvre, and I quoted his very own words. Besides Rock & Folk was mentioned in the article - the bands selected for the commercial deal are chosen by the Fnac staff and R&F editors. Get yourself a copy of 'Contact' at the FNAC Information desk if you want to check.
