Ryan McGinley
Irregular Regulars
04 January through 10 February 2007

Team Gallery, 83 Grand Street, betw Wooster & Green, 6-8

Team is pleased to present a show of new photographs by Ryan McGinley. Entitled Irregular Regulars, the exhibition will run from the 4th of January through the 10th of February 2007. The gallery is located at 83 Grand Street, cross streets Wooster and Greene, on the ground floor.

Ryan McGinley has been following Morrissey's tours for the past two years capturing the reclusive singer and his committed fans all over the US, the UK, and in Mexico. Although he has been an intensely devoted fan of the musician for most of his young life, McGinley has gained a distance on his subject through a total immersion. Having photographed quite literally hundreds of shows, McGinley becomes, in a sense, accustomed to the patterns of Morrissey's performances and can ''predict'' the response of fans for whom the singer's appearances form a major life anchor. McGinley is both immersed in the event (physically and psychologically) and, at the same time, so ''experienced'' a viewer that he can comment from outside.

In McGinley's Morrissey photographs, the lighting and coloration is, in large part, the result of the lighting palette chosen by the singer. Pinks, oranges, lurid blues and bright yellows all bathe the audience members during particular tunes and these colors in turn inspire McGinley to look for specific types of audience members. Not surprisingly, most of subjects who end up in his pictures are both completely enraptured by Morrissey's antics while possessing an intrinsic beauty that viewers of McGinley's works will find spellbinding. It is hard to take your eyes off these gorgeous kids who, in turn, are so completely awestruck by their idol.

At 29, McGinley's work is currently included in Americans: Masterpieces of American Photography since 1945 at the Kunsthalle Wien. He was the youngest artist to ever have a monographic exhibition at The Whitney Museum of American Art. Solo shows followed at New York's PS1 and in Spain at the MUSAC.

From the January edition of Esquire (page 36, U.S. edition):

"Johnny Marr Vs. Morrissey: The Smiths rank with the Police as one of the most reunion-resistant bands ever. Our pick: Marr. The new Modest Mouse record features Marr as a full-blown member -- a move more intriguing than the sum of Morrissey's solo efforts."

Morrissey Hurts Hotel Chelsea's Feelings
The poor Hotel Chelsea is feeling a bit down after finding a letter from one Steven Morrissey (known to most as. simply: Morrissey). The letter states that he will be leaving (artless) Texas to do a photoshoot using the hotel as an "insignificant background".

Of course, legends are often forgiven, and this is no exception. The Hotel Chelsea bloggers write: "Since your letter is dated January 16, 1981, I feel confident you have repented of your sin of false pride by this time. You can come back to the Chelsea and play a concert for us anytime."

Here's the full letter:

Morrissey Says He'll Never Be Knighted - Filter
by Staff | 12.29.2006

Morrissey has said that he has wrecked his chances of ever being knighted by Queen Elizabeth II by writing songs like The Smiths' "The Queen Is Dead." However he insists that he is more deserving of knighthood than many of its recipients. On December 23rd at Manchester's G-Mex arena the 47 year old singer said from the stage:

"Just look at who has been honoured already. Mad Irish singer Daniel O'Donnell has an MBE [Member of the Order of the British Empire] and obese Jamie Oliver has an OBE [Officer of the Order of the British Empire]."

Performers who have been knightted recently include Tom Jones, Mick Jagger and Bono. Morrissey was recently voted the #2 British Living Icon by BBC's Culture Show. He was beat out by nature documentary maker David Attenborough, while Paul McCartney placed third.

Morrissey criticises New Year's Honours list
From www.breakingnews.ie:

Morrissey: I deserve an honour more than 'mad' Daniel

Singer Morrissey accepts he has wrecked his chances of being honoured by the British Queen Elizabeth II - but he insists he is more deserving of a title than many recipients.

The former Smiths frontman distanced himself from the establishment with tracks like The Queen is Dead, but now concedes he would be proud to pick up a prize like those given to Tom Jones and Mick Jagger.

"It's songs like that (The Queen Is Dead) which mean my chances are slim," said the 47-year-old.

"But just look at who has been honoured already. Mad Irish singer Daniel O'Donnell has an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) and obese Jamie Oliver has an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire)."

On saturday 30/12/06 the well known Football Focus magazine show on BBC1 did a retrospective of the good/bad and ugly year of football- during the part about scandal, particularly Zidane's headbutt, Morrissey could be heard singing Dear God Please Help Me. God bless the BBC!

Other nominations include Abbey Road while the album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" has made it as an icon. So far only 36 percent of online voters think that Salford Lad's Club is an icon.
