Sunday night at Chelmsford, review by John Earls - Channel 4 teletext

The Morrissey crowd is shockingly small for a headline act, Razorlight stealing all his fans for the night. He’d have been forgiven a strop. The contrary old goat, typically, is at his most charming. Or he would be if the setlist made any concessions to the festival; there are three B-sides.

Far too reliant on the new album, no explanation why pre-Quarry solo songs are ignored – yet the songs he does do are sung and played to perfection.

Ganglord sums up Morrissey’s festival quandary. One of Moz’s bilious snarls, here it’s as good as Irish Blood. But it’s a B-side with no place at a fest.

Similarly, the highlight is Life is a Pigsty, a mordant, stately waltz. It also lasts several years, plenty of time to wonder “Where’s Suedehead?”

The band at least are powerful, Moz on good form for one-liners … If he keeps this up, he’ll be great next time: halfway down the bill.

On my blog, I have uploaded a rare 2002 interview with Johnny Marr, in which he speaks very openly about Mozz and The Smiths.

It's on www.myspace.com/indieanorak - under the blogging section.

Cheers
