Ringleader has sold 62,709 copies in its first week of release.

Full story here (Chart Refugees, free registration required).

Excerpt:
Twelve years after his first number one album Vauxhall And I debuted in pole position with a sale of just 25,446, Morrissey returns to the summit with Ringleader Of The Tormentors, which sold 62,709 copies last week. That's fewer than the first week sales of his last album, Morrissey, You Are The Quarry, which opened with 74,995 copies, but had to settle for second place behind Keane's Hopes And Fears. Ringleader is the first number one ever on Attack, which started life as a reggae label in 1972, and is now a Sanctuary imprint.

Morrissey first topped the chart with The Smiths' Meat Is Murder in February 1985, and extends his span to more than 21 years with his fourth number one in all, and his second solo number one, Ringleader Of The Tormentors. The only artists with longer spans of number ones are Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, Cliff Richard, The Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Diana Ross, Pink Floyd, Abba and Barbra Streisand.

'Vauxhall & I' has been placed in Mojo Magazines Top 100 Modern Classic Albums, i.e. the Top 100 albums released since issue #1 of Mojo in September 1993.

Coming in at a rather disappointing No.63, the blurb that accompanies the entry reads as follows:
"Recorded at Abbey Road, this was the flawlessly coherent album Morrissey fans had been willing since the demise of The Smiths. Replacing 'Kill Uncle's wistful anti-pop and 'Your Aresenal's glam buffeting with a statley strength and restraint, 'Vauxhall & I' arrived draped in the muted undertone of a man who had just lost three of his collaborators: Mick Ronson, manager Nigel Thomas and video director Tim Broad. It remains his most complete work to date".

For anyone interested, the Top 10 is:
10: Beck: 'Odelay'
9: Nirvana: 'MTV Unplugged In New York'
8: The White Stripes: 'Elephant'
7: Radiohead: 'Kid A'
6: The Flaming Lips: 'The Soft Bulletin'
5: Oasis: 'Definetely Maybe'
4: Bob Dylan: 'Time Out Of Mind'
3: Radiohead: 'OK Computer'
2: Johnny Cash: 'American Recordings'
1: Jeff Buckley: 'Grace'

Molko: I wish I kept quiet on sexuality - Digital Spy

Brian Molko says he wishes he kept quiet about being bisexual, like Morrissey and pal Michael Stipe.

The Placebo frontman has found people concentrate on him rather than his music because of his openness.

"I was open about my sexuality because I was filled with a great deal of musical bravado when Placebo started," he explained. "Coming out of the closet seemed to be important to me in terms of making a stand.

"Unfortunately, we became this faggy band in dresses in the eyes of the media. People started to talk about that and not the music as a by-product."

Now Molko understands why stars like Morrissey and Stipe – whom he sings with on new album Meds - are not so outspoken.

"I think that's probably why people like Michael and Morrissey have been relatively quiet," he commented. "REM are a very important band for me. I was a teenager growing up in New York and Michael Stipe's voice was very important to the development of my own voice."

While reading an interview with Xiu Xiu on Pitchfork, I came across this question.

Pitchfork: Do you ever feel like Morrissey?

Xiu Xiu: I feel like a figurine of a figurine of Morrissey. Did you know that Morrissey calls Prince "Ponce?" I wonder if they know each other or if it's like dirty looks at Spago.
