From this week's issue of The Onion:

"When The Smiths broke up in 1987, everyone knew that Morrissey would be exposed as a no-talent, and that the full genius of guitarist/songwriter Johnny Marr would be revealed at last. Impressive session work for The Pretenders, Talking Heads, The The, and others fanned the flames. Then the should-have-been-brilliant-but-wasn't Bernard Sumner collaboration happened. Then everyone forgot about Johnny Marr. Then, earlier this year, Marr and his band The Healers released an album that sounded like the lost work of some uninspired early-'90s Stone Roses wannabe. Then everyone forgot about Johnny Marr again."

In the music video for The Ataris- "The saddest song (acoustic)" the singer is wearing a Smiths shirt, and the child portraying him when he was younger is wearing a Morrissey shirt.

Some months ago I was the lead singer of a Smiths cover band at school. At a specific occasion we got to play "This Charming Man" before audience, and I've got it all on video. Watch it and listen to see what you think! (RealVideo, 12.3 MB, 3:45)

This is by no means a major scoop but since it's approaching the festive season a light disposable story will do no harm

'You're A Star' is the Irish Pop/American Idol type programme which hosts auditions throughout the country. The eventual winner will go on to represent Ireland in the Eurovision song contest! I prefered the prizes Jim Bowen used to knock out on Bulleye personally but there you go.

Anyway, the auditions were in Letterkenny recently - a lovely expanding town, host to a fine Smiths performance in December of 1984, and still fondly remembered by Morrissey. Anyway some bloke managed to impress a group of Judges including the odious Phil Coulter (composer of Sandie Shaw's abysmal 'Puppet on a String') and Louis Walsh (Boyzone, Girls Aloud manager, with a personality as banal as his musical taste) with his acoustic rendition of 'Panic'. It's the first time I've ever come across someone using a Smiths/Morrissey track for one of these type of things. Imagine a Morrissey fan going all the way to Eurovision glory? No I can't either!
