I came accross this on the internet, I don't know whether there's anything in it or not, it seems to imply that there's a "Very Best of Morrissey" scheduled for a 2002 release in the UK.

view it here - Morrissey discography at WindowsMedia.com

Not sure about this one - the release date is listed as Jan. 15, 2002. The original info is from AMG, the All Music Guide.

While looking for some information about Hefner’s new album Dead Media, I found this interview at Garbled Communications UK where guitarist Jack Hayter admits that most of Hefner’s members “very much dislike The Smiths”.

If you ask me, I find it pretty strange, especially after Ant defined The Smiths as one of the bands that inspired him to begin writing music. However, I still think that Hefner is a great band and in my opinion, Darren Hayman has written some of the best lyrics since the Man himself.

In the German "Musikexpress" is a short article about the wonderful Hope Sandoval who used to be the singer of Mazzy Star.

At the end of the interview she says (translated): "Until the next interview I'll listen to 'The Best Of The Smiths'. They were so melancholic but they had hope in their music as well."

Now I know why I love her so much. :-)

This is of more interest to British fans of Morrissey, but IF it ever happened it would be of interest to many others.

Desert Island Discs is a long running BBC Radio programme where the good and the famous choose their favourite eight records and talk through their life story...The records are meant to sustain you through your lonely island existence.

Featured guests have in the past been somewhat of the older variety, but recently actor Ewan MacGregor and trendy chef Jamie Oliver have been on. Next in line could be Mozza. It's been discussed by Radio Four producers who think he'll be perfect and he's been asked to appear, but I understand he hasn't agreed yet...If anyone out there has any sway over Morrissey, please advise him to DO IT...It would be a great chance for him to play exactly what music he likes to a large audience (between one and two million) of intelligent listeners. And imagine how maudlin he'd sound being asked to describe his imaginary life on a desert island...he'd be in paradise!!

The current issue of Q (issue 186, January 2002) features the 50 most exciting tunes of all time, and The Smiths' "The Queen Is Dead" came in at number 29. Q had this to say:
Lyrically, "The Queen Is Dead" is almost without equal in the Smiths' canon: Here's an England darkened and in decline, where the Windsors are brought low and nine-year-old toughs peddle drugs ("I never even knew what drugs WERE"). but it's Johnny Marr, not Morrissey, who supplies the song's full-pelt momentum - churning gnarled guitar lines all undercut with a layer of swampy feedback. Marr played it alone in a virtual trance, an attempt to find the midpoint between the Velvets and MC5. You can only wonder what the original, eight-minute version sounded like.
