BlueGirl writes: Here's the write-up from the Rhino site - hot off the press!NOVEMBER SPAWNS A MONSTER CD!
First U.S. BEST OF MORRISSEY Collection Due November 6
Every day will be like Sunday when Warner Archives/Rhino Records releases THE BEST OF MORRISSEY on November 6. Assembled with Morrissey's direct involvement, the CD is the first-ever U.S. greatest hits package from one of alternative rock's most distinctive voices.
The 21 recordings on this collection include tracks from all six of Morrissey's solo studio albums (1988's Viva Hate, 1991's Kill Uncle, 1992's Your Arsenal, 1994's Vauxhall And I, 1995's Southpaw Grammar, and 1997's Maladjusted) as well as the compilations Bona Drag and My Early Burglary Years. THE BEST OF MORRISSEY also includes the non-LP U.K. single "Lost" from 1997.
No less than eight of these songs reached the Top 20 in Morrissey's native England, and you can still hear alternative anthems like "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get," "Suedehead," "The Last Of The Famous International Playboys," "Interesting Drug," "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful," and "Alma Matters" all over modern rock radio here in the U.S. In addition to these more familiar tracks, Moz himself selected a complement of choice album sides. Available for $17.98 from retail outlets and www.rhino.com, THE BEST OF MORRISSEY also includes Michael Bracewell's illuminating liner notes, full lyrics, and numerous rare photos sure to thrill fans.
Born Steven Patrick Morrissey in a suburb of Manchester, Morrissey set the British music scene on its ear in the mid-1980s as frontman for The Smiths. Though that group's lifespan was brief, its influence was enormous and Morrissey emerged from its ashes in 1988 as a college rock icon. His solo career continues to reflect the sexual ambiguity, luxuriantly indulgent lyrics, and inimitable crooning style he made famous with The Smiths while allowing him greater freedom to drape them in musical textures like synth-pop, Latin or rockabilly. --- Also, there will be promo CD / poster giveaways courtesy of Rhino at tonight's (Nov. 2) record release party in Los Angeles ( flyer, original story).

chelsea smiler writes: Free with the latest edition of Dazed and Confused is a booklet from their publishers, Vision On, detailing the forthcoming publications. Kevin Cummins is listed as publishing "The Smiths and Beyond" on 7th March 2002. It says "The arch conceptualiser in Cummins and the self-mythologiser in Morrissey was a fecund combination, producing photos which transcend their status as memorabilia. The Smiths and Beyond by Cummins may not be the last word on the band, but it's certainly the last transparency." Hyperbole aside it seems that we'll get 96 pages of colour and black and white photos for £12.99 or $18.95 - the piece is accompanied by a nice photo which says Dublin Stadium, 27th April 1981 although clearly its from the Kill Uncle tour in 1991 - hopefully by March they'll have proof-read the captions.

Corey Wittig writes: I was given this link to an interview at Devil In The Woods Recordswith the gorgeous singer of Ivy, Dominique Durand. It's in the "13 Questions" section and there is a link right on the front page. Ivy is a wonderful band if you don't already know them!
1. What was the first song you heard that completely floored you, made you shiver, made you want to make music? I remember the first time. My friend played this new band for me—it was The Smiths. That song “This Charming Man.” It was such a new sound, so refreshing, with a really simple production. Such an unbelievable song. And great, clean guitar. And what a unique voice. Back then I didn’t speak any English so I didn’t understand the words, but frankly it didn’t matter ’cause I had discovered a great new band and they have since become my biggest influence.

Stuart writes: Moz cropped up in the Top Ten TV Villians on Channel 4 again, on the 27 October. They were profiling the scourge of Roland Browning and fat kids everywhere, 'Gripper' from evergreen children's favourite 'Grange Hill'. It turns out the actor who played him (Mark Savage) has been short of work since he left the show in 1985, with his last meaningful job being that of the 'stalker' who follows Moz around in the 'Dagenham Dave' video, which they duly played!chris h. also writes: On Saturday 27 , a C4 programme entitled Top Ten TV Hardmen showed a clip of the video for 'Daghenam Dave'. The reason for this was that one of the actors featured in the top ten's only other work was a "cameo" in , and I quote "a video by another bequiffed 80's icon.".
Come on C4 , Moz is still an icon !

dobbs writes: Boz will be playing a solo-acoustic show at Don Hills in NYC on December 7th. This show, similar to the ones done in Claifornia and Ireland earlier this year, will consist of Boz playing songs that have influenced him or that he wrote and is especially proud of. Before and after the set there will be tons of Moz and Smiths being spun on the platters so come on down and have a ball!

The Song 'Sumisu' will be available as a single in November. The video is already on Farin's website and features a lot of Smiths/Morrissey references in a Nosferatu-style Movie.
Anyone can download an MP3 (96 kbps, 1.5 MB) of the song from my website.
Here is a quick transalation of the lyrics:

Saw an interview on teletext in Britain with Tim Booth (associate of Morrissey's) of James, and they have called it a day!
Tim says that it was because he wanted to spend more time writing screenplays and acting. Nothing to do with James losing their deal with Mercury, then...

Puppet on string writes: One of the participators in the Swedish reality based TV show "Farmen" (a group of people living isololated in a farm...), Paul, is wearing a Morrissey T - shirt. He's a new participator and I spotted this t - shirt (black with Morrissey sitting down, possibly southpaw or Maladjusted era - I'm not sure) quite early on in yesterdays episode.
Highly interesting, I know. I expect at least 70 comments.
