Several years ago I heard a rare 30 second clip that was floating around the Internet of The Smiths performing an old Cookies song entitled "I Want A Boy For My Birthday". Johnny Marr stated that the song was only performed once at The Smiths first concert at The Ritz on October 4th, 1982. Intrigued, I wondered if there was a more complete recording of the Morrissey/Marr version. Although Marr has stated that he doubts a recording exists, it seems that this brief clip must have been culled from a more complete recording. While I've yet to come across a complete Smiths version of the song I was able to dig up the original. If anyone is interested I've posted an MP3 of the original Cookies version on my Brit Pop page (scroll to the bottom) as well as that mysterious 30 second Smiths clip.

If anyone has any more information about this song or any other rare Smiths/Morrissey recordings, please post them! During these lean news times it would be nice to see some of those rarities rise from the woodwork. "Striptease", "Kitt", "A Fool Such As I", Anyone?

Leo García - he opened the Moz concert last March - is some kind of indie-icon in the Argentinean music scene who during the last couple of months has gained a lot of disciples with his new song "Morrissey" (unreleased as far as I know).

The song tells the story of a guy who has a "very special relationship" with a friend who shares his love for Morrissey. While the girlfriend of the latest doesn't even seem to have a clue who Moz is, they both locked themselves in a car in order to listen to his records.

The refrain of the song goes something like this:

"Does your girlfriend know that we listen to Morrissey?
She listens to Björk, Bowie and Beck
She repeats all day the word "DJ"
And she even listens to the record I gave to you
But she doesn't know a thing about Morrissey...
Morrissey! Morrissey! Morrissey!"

Robbie Williams was on the UK's chart show 'Top of the Pops' this evening (Friday 19.30 8/12/00) performing his single 'Supreme'. The take on Morrissey was so obvious that even my wife noticed (not a big Moz fan). The peformance featured a fake disability (tho' crutches were later abandoned), and a quiffed hairstyle. He also encouraged stage invaders and then kneeled as people approached... just as our Mozzer does. Finally he was mobbed - it could have been "Everyday is Like Sunday". Coincidence, or does Robbie have the "Live in Dallas" DVD??
